1. Professor Norah Khadzini Olembo. - Executive Director

Prof Norah OlemboProfessor Norah Khadzini Olembo is the Executive Director of African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum (ABSF). She holds a Post Doctoral Degree in Molecular Biology from Courthould Institute (University of London) in the United Kingdom, a Post Graduate Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Masters Degree in Zoology from UoN, Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Zoology and Botany from the same University. She also holds an advanced level Certificate in Chemistry, Biology and Physics from Mount School in New York. 

       Professor Olembo has also received professional certificate from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) training in Insect Growth, Development and Behavior, Insect Endocrinology from International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Kenya, Strategic Planning from Voluntary Agencies Development Assistance in Kenya (V.A.D.A) and Recombinant DNA techniques from Courthould Institute in the United Kingdom.

        Before her appointment at ABSF, Professor Olembo served as an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Nairobi. She also served as the Managing Director of Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI). She has also worked as the Director of the Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO) in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and chaired the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Nairobi. Prior to that, Professor Norah Olembo served as a consultant for Kenya Non-Governmental Organizations Committee for the 1995 United Nations End of Decade Women Conference. She has also been a Senior Lecturer and Graduate Research Assistant at the UoN. Professor Olembo has undertaken many assignments and published in scientific journals and proceedings. She is also the Chairperson, member and trustee in many public service organizations and societies in Kenya and other African countries.



2. Mr. Lucas Sese.- Deputy Director

Mr.Lucas SeseMr. Lucas Sese is the Deputy Director. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the university of Nairobi and Postgraduate Diploma in Soil Conservation from the same university. He also holds professional certificate in Plant Production and Protection and one in Irrigation, Drainage and Water Development.

Mr. Sese is a retired civil servant. He has worked for the government of Kenya for 26 years. Previous to his retirement, he was the Chief Patent Examiner at Kenya Industrial property Institute (KIPI). He also served as the Deputy Director department of Technical Services at Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO). Mr. Sese was the Secretary General for Kenya National Federation of Cooperatives (KNFC) and an Assistant Commissioner for Cooperative Development, Ministry of Cooperatives. Prior to that, he was the Agricultural Extension Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Crop and Animal Production Department. He has also received other trainings in Intellectual Property from WIPO, JICA, KARI, WTO, KIRDI, and USAID. He has presented papers in workshops and trainings in Africa. He has also attended other WIPO diplomatic conferences, assemblies and ministerial meetings across the globe.

Mr. Sese has been in the forefront in the development of the African Model Legislation for the Protection of Community, Farmers and Breeders Rights and Access to Biological Resources. He is a member of several organizations and chairs the sub committee on WTO. In 2001, he was awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) from the then President of Kenya, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, for his distinguished service to the Republic of Kenya.

3. Mr. Felix M’mboyi. - Programme Officer

Felix MmboyiMr. Felix M’mboyi is the Programmes Officer. Mr. M’mboyi holds a Master degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Egerton University in Kenya. He also possesses professional training in Management Focused Monitoring and Evaluation (MFM and E) from World Bank Institute-Washington and Computer Applications in Data Processing and Analysis and Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) from Michigan State University. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree with interest in Agricultural Biotechnology Policy and Food Security in the Eastern and Southern Africa region.

                Mr. M’mboyi previously worked as the Cooperative Development and Training Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. He has served as a Graduate Fellow at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Nairobi and as a  Research Scientist at Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and headed the Socioeconomics section at the National Animal Husbandry Research Center (NAHRC).He has also previously worked as an Assistance Programmes Officer at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kenya ,as a Research Fellow /Agricultural Economist under a USAID funded programme and Monitoring and Evaluation Adviser at Project Operational Department at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Kenya office before taking up the position of  a Visiting Research Fellow at Czech University of Agriculture in Central Europe. 

    Mr. Felix M’mboyi has been involved in many other activities such as consultancies and research and has written several scientific publications. He also serves as a Honorary Director to several environmental and Developmental NGO’s operating in Kenya.




4.  Dr. George Edward Mamati.- Programme Associate (Biotechnology)

 Dr. George Mamati is a Programme Associate/Biotechnologist. He holds a Doctorial degree in Genetics and Breeding from Zhejiang University in China. He also holds a Masters Degree in Plant Breeding from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi.

Dr. Mamati is currently a lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Prior to his appointment, he served as a part time lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Kenyatta University and at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Botany Department.  Dr. Mamati has also served at Tea Research Foundation of Kenya as a Plant Breeder Research Officer, as an Agricultural Officer in the Ministry Of Agriculture and as Programme Assistant for Biotechnology and Public Policy at the Africa Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS).

Dr. George Mamati has published several books, newsletters and journals on Food Science.



5. Mrs. Christine Auma Nambiro.- Programme Accountant

ChristineMrs. Christine Nambiro is the Programme Accountant. She is a graduate of University of Nairobi with a Masters Degree in Finance. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Mrs. Nambiro has also received professional training in Accounting from Kenya Accountants and Secretaries Board (KASNEB). She is well vast with computers, SAGE and QuickBooks.

Mrs. Nambiro has worked as a Consulting Accounts Manager for Environmental Resources Management Centre for Sustainable Development (ERMCSD), in the Finance Department at Symphony Limited, Nation Media Group as the Courier Sales Executive and as the Printing Sales Executive.  Nambiro has also served as the Administration Assistant for the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF), Finance and Administration Officer for Uhandisi Limited and as Accounts Assistant for Utamaduni Limited.




6. Mr. Ben K. Indangasy. - IT Administrator

Ben IndangasyMr. Ben is the Information Technology Administrator. He is currently undertaking his degree studies (part time) at Kenya School of Professional Studies (KSPS) under Jomo Kenyatta University Of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He is also enrolled at Kenya School of Professional Studies (KSPS).  He holds a Diploma in Information Technology from Info- Tech Training Centre.

Mr. Indangasy   has served at KIKA Strategic IT Consultant as a System Developer.  He has also served at Computer Society of Kenya as a Communication Officer. Prior to that, he worked at Sheer Logic Consultants as an Information Technology Consultant.

7.Miss Oirere Moragwa- Biotechnology Programme Associate

Oirere is a Medical Biotechnology Intern. Miss Moragwa is a graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She has also undergone a computer training course at Breldan College in Nairobi, Kenya.

Oirere has interests primarily in Medical Biotechnology and other biotechnologies including agricultural biotechnology





8. Miss Jenniffer Wamaitha Mwai- Biotechnology Programme Associate

Jenniffer is a Plant Biotechnology Intern. Miss Mwai is a graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture (JKUAT). She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Plant Biotechnology. Jenniffer is also trained in Computer Applications from Elite College Nyahururu, Kenya.

Before joining ABSF, Jennifer has been working with various organizations in different capacities. She was part of the team that set up the laboratory at EM Technologies and performed Microbial analysis of EM products. She has also worked as an intern at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute Biotechnology Centre (KARI) in Nairobi. Mwai also took part in guiding and counseling and Aids awareness activities through JKUAT education.

Jenniffer has interests in Plant Biotechnology including Tissue Culture and Plant Transformations

  Mr. Kennedy Fredrick Oyugi.- Programme Associate (Policy)

 Kennedy     
Mr. Kennedy Oyugi is a Programme Associate /Biotechnology Policy. Mr.Oyugi is a graduate of University of Nairobi and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. He is currently pursuing his Master of Science degree in Agriculture and Applied Economics at the University of Nairobi.. He has received other professional trainings in computer and Accounting from Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB).

       Mr.Oyugi has worked at Kenya Agriculture Commodity Exchange(KACE) as a Marketing Information Point Manager and as a Research Assistant at the National NGO Coordinating Committee on Desertification-Kenya(NCCD-K).He founded the Kisii Agricultural Stakeholders Consortium and is a member of several other organizations. He has also published two reports on agriculture in Kenya.

10.Joseph Ombaka - Programme Associate (Plant Transformation)

JosephMr Ombaka is a graduate of the University of Nairobi in - Bachelor of Science Agriculture. Since leaving the university, he has been working with various organizations in different capacities. Before joining ABSF, he served as a Field Research Supervisor with the Stead man Group where he was involved in various research activities. Mr. Ombaka has also worked for Mumias Out-growers Company LTD as a Zone supervisor in the sugarcane belt of western Kenya. He was actively involved in farmer-extension activities including capacity building-training and in the transfer of technology to cane growing farmers through collaboration with the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute..

Joseph has also worked with Tegemeo Institute of Agriculture Policy and Development (under USAID funding) where he was a Research Assistant involved in Collecting and recording data on Agricultural production, inputs use, marketing and other business enterprises as sources of income. Earlier, Joseph worked as a Resaerch Assistant with the National NGO Co-ordinating Committee on Desertification – Kenya (NCCD-K), an affiliate organization that works closely with UNEP and UNDP in development management. He was involved in ;Implementation of Arid Semi Arid Land (ASALs) Projects in selected dry districts of Kenya; Co-ordinating dry land projects with affiliated NGOs, CBOs and other civil societies and in undertaking research surveys on pastoralists communities in Arid and Semi Arid land (ASALs)

Mr. Ombaka has professional and postgraduate research interests in Plant Transformation and Extension-Research Linkages.


11. Miss Ogola Dinah Atieno. - Communications Officer

DinahMiss Dinah Ogola is the Communications Assistant. She is a graduate of Daystar University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications She has also received other professional training in Environmental Journalism and Communications, HIV/AIDS, Peer Counseling and Life Skills.

Miss Ogola has served at Sayare media as a news collector and editor. She has also worked at St. Paul’s ACK Church as a secretary and at Machakos Boys High School as a Peer Educator on HIV/AIDS. She is currently a volunteer writer for The Anglican Newsletter.

Miss. Gladys Wahito King'ori. - IT Assistant

GladysMiss Gladys Wahito is the Information Technology Assistant. She is a graduate of Africa Nazarene University. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. She has undertaken relevant trainings in Computer Programming, Computer Architecture, Networking, Database Management Systems, and Mathematics. Miss Wahito also has a diploma in IMIS from Strathmore University.

Gladys has served at Africa Nazarene University as student Mentor and as a Mathematics Tutor.  She has also worked at Kenya BP/Shell Limited as an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Helpdesk Assistant. Prior to that, she served at the Central Bank of Kenya as a Computer Maintenance and Repair Assistant.  Ms.Wahito has also served at Strathmore University as a Librarian.
13. Miss Naomi Karimi Njiru. - Librarian (Kenya Biotechnology Information Center)

NaomiMiss Naomi Karimi is the Librarian. She is a graduate of Kenyatta University. She holds a Bachelor of Education/ Arts in French and Library Studies. She has served as a Cataloguer and Classifier at Moi University. She also served at Kenya Polytechnic as Librarian and also at Kahawa Wendani as a Tutorial Fellow. Miss Njiru also served as a volunteer at Kikuyu Hospital, Kenyatta University Christian Union and in Rotaract Club.

Miss NJiru has received other professional trainings in Computer, Sociology, Drama, and Constitutional Review Affairs and in Women Initiative Symposium.



14. Mr. Arnold Musanga Simiyu. - Office Assistant

Mrs. Adoyo has served at Pest Control Product Board as an Office Assistant.  She has also served at Kenya Agricultural Research Institute as an Office Assistan



INTERNS AT ABSF

 
1. Miss. Rechar Metrine - Communications Intern

Miss Rechar is a communications Intern. She holds a Diploma in Communications from the Kenya Institute of Business and Technology in Eldoret, Kenya. She also holds a Certificate in Computer Training from Dawn to Dusk College in Eldoret, Kenya.

Before joining ABSF, Rechar worked as an intern at the Sayare Radio and TV station as a News gatherer and presenter. She also served as an intern at the Kenya News Agency based in Nairobi, specializing in Writing Business, Political, Features and Court Reporting. Metrine has also cared for orphaned children at Eldoret Community Bible Church and provided Guiding and counseling to Aids victims at Moi teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret in Kenya.

Metrine has interests in Biotechnology reporting through Print and Electronic Media.
